According to press release by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Federal Ministry of Justice dated 02. February 2024, the member states of the European Union in the Permanent Representatives Committee approved the AI Regulation.
With this AI Regulation, the EU is setting the framework for the use of artificial intelligence in Europe. The aim is to promote innovation. At the same time, these rules are intended to ensure that fundamental rights are safeguarded. A risk-based approach is used here. The higher the risks, the stricter the obligations. Social scoring is completely prohibited, for example.
Before the AI Regulation comes into force, the Parliament and a Council Configuration must formally approve it. In principle, the rules will apply 24 months after entry into force. Bans take effect after just six months.
