In recent weeks, the R1 model from DeepSeek has made the headlines. This is a very powerful open source solution which, according to the Chinese manufacturer, could be developed with comparatively little investment.
This raises the question of which open source solutions are being developed in Germany and the European Union.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS published an interesting article on this a few days ago:
“Open language models with improved reasoning for powerful and transparent artificial intelligence in Europe”
Accordingly, Europe is joining forces in an “OpenEuroLLM” project. The aim is to create a solution that strengthens Europe’s competitiveness, research expertise and digital sovereignty. The project is being implemented by a consortium of renowned European universities and research institutions, companies and EuroHPC centers (“supercomputers”). The project builds on the experience and knowledge of the partners from previous projects and thus has access to large repositories of high-quality data as well as pilot LLMs that have already been developed.
The project was launched on 01.02.2025.
